¹And Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the inner parts of the fish. ²And he said,

“I called on account of my predicament to the Lord,

And he answered me.

I cried out from the belly of the underworld,

And you heard my voice.

³And you cast me into the deep,

In the heart of the seas,

And the tide surrounded me.

All your breakers and your waves passed over me.

⁴And I said,

‘I have been driven out of your sight,

But I will look again at your holy temple.’

⁵Water has surrounded me,

Threatening my life.

The deep has encompassed me;

Sea-weed is bound around my head.

⁶I descended to the roots of the mountains;

The earth with its bars were closing in after me for age-long time,

But you rescued my life from the pit,

O Lord my God.

⁷When my life was draining away from me,

I remembered the Lord,

And my prayer came to you

– To your holy temple.

⁸Those who pay respect to vain idols

Abandon themselves to their tender mercies,

⁹But I will sacrifice to you with a voice of thanksgiving;

That which I vowed,

I will fulfil,

For salvation is of the Lord.”

¹⁰Then the Lord spoke to the fish, and it ejected Jonah onto the dry land.
